She released her first solo album, She’s So Unusual, in 1983, which included hits like Girls Just Want to Have Fun and She Bop.
Lauper would go on to win a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1985, then would later win a Tony award for writing the Broadway musical Kinky Boots! She’s also done a lot of humanitarian work, and is an active advocate for gay and transgender rights.
