Women of the 70s Then and Now

#56. Sally Kirkland

Sally Kirkland was born in New York City to a Vogue fashion editor and her husband, so it’s a bit of a surprise she chose acting over the world of fashion! She began acting in the theater when she was 19, and had a number of small roles in popular films all throughout the 1970s. Some of her better-known films include The Sting, The Way We Were, and A Star Is Born. In 1987, she appeared in the critically acclaimed film Anna. She won a Golden Globe for the role, and was also nominated for an Academy Award. Sally had a pair of breast implants removed in 199, and she went on to become a vocal advocate for other women who had been harmed by implants! These days, she’s busy teaching acting in California and writing an auto-biography.

#57. Ellen Burstyn

A prolific theater, television, and film actress, Ellen Burstyn has been nominated for multiple awards, including seven Golden Globes, two Academy Awards, and three Emmys. In addition to these nominations, she’s won two Academy Awards, two Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Tony Award! This makes her one of only 22 people to ever win the “Triple Crown of Acting”. Some of Ellen’s most highly praised works include The Last Picture Show, The Exorcist, and Requiem for a Dream. Despite being in her 80s, Ellen is still acting today! Some of her more recent appearances include the 2015 film Adaline and the 2016 drama Custody, and House of Cards fans will probably recognize her as Elizabeth Hale. Ellen is also an active supporter of the Democratic party and a proud mother and grandmother.

#58. Jaclyn Smith

Jaclyn Smith began her career in 1969 by appearing in a number of television commercials, and it wasn’t until 7 years later in 1976 that she landed her famous role as Kelly Garrett in the original Charlie’s Angels series. Jaclyn was the only original female lead to remain with the series for its complete run, and she even reprised the role for a cameo in the 2003 movie Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. She went on to appear in a number TV films and miniseries over the next 20 years, including Rage of Angels and Nightmare in the Daylight. In 1985, Jaclyn launched a line of clothing at Kmart. She’s been gradually expanding the line over the years while slowly winding down her acting career. Her most recent television appearance was on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2012.

#59. Carol Kane

Born in 1952, American actress Carol Kane made her professional theater debut at the age of 14 and went on to become well known for both her excellent performances both on film and on Broadway. Some of her more famous roles have been in the 1975 film Hestor Street, in the comedy Annie Hall,and on the TV series Taxi. She’s also known for playing Madame Morrible in the musical Wicked, in regional productions as well as in a nine year run on Broadway. Over the course of her career, Carol has earned herself two Emmys for her role in Taxi as well as an Academy Award nomination for Hestor Street. She’s still acting today, and most recently has been appearing as the landlord Lillian in the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Born in 1946, Dolly Parton is one of the most well known faces in country music, having been at the forefront of the industry for decades. Dolly has won many awards throughout the years, including 8 Grammys! She also has released 41 top 10 albums, and numerous number one songs. It’s no surprise that she’s still a household name today! Dolly’s talents aren’t limited to the music industry. She’s made several film appearances in well, most notable in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias. Younger generations will even recognize her from her appearances on TV shows like Hannah Montana. Dolly is also one of the few people in the entertainment industry to have had a successful lifelong marriage. In fact, she and her husband renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary in 2016!
